Luke 11:42 NLT: “What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.
My dear friend in Christ, there is a tone of misinformation going on about tithing in our world today. Some don’t even know why they should tithe. Others want tithes refunded. Some even say Jesus never mandated anyone to tithe. While some who tithe, wonder why their lives are not any better than others who do not care about tithing. Well, Jesus in our text put it in a simple manner saying “You should tithe, yes but don’t ignore the more important things”.
The more important things are your love for God and love for neighbors. You cannot claim to be a child of God who pays tithe while you are a wife-beater, a thief, a lier, a cheat, and so on. You don’t care how your neighbor feels, you are not interested in their pains or even regard God. You see injustice and throw your face the other way or even do it yourself. Jesus insists that these are the more important things. God is love. He who does not love does not have God. If that is the case, then what’s the use of your tithe?
When you tithe, you are honoring God, and its an act of love towards God. You cannot claim to love someone without giving out something in response to that love. The Bible says that God so love the world that He gave. God demonstrated that giving is an act of love. Some might say, what about offerings? Just as you give offerings to honor God, the same way you tithe to honor him. “One-tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy.
It’s difficult to give up 10% of your money (income) and so, some look for a way around it. It’s a sacrifice you should make for your God who is always providing for you, knowing that He will always provide even more. This is a kingdom principle just as offerings. It cannot be changed. Make up your mind to tithe from today just as Abraham did to Melkizadek (a typology of Christ) even before the law was given and also show love for God and your neighbor. Each time you tithe to any servant of Christ, you are tithing to Christ Himself who is now our high priest. Shalom.
Declare to yourself loud: my tithes belong to the Lord.
1. Heavenly Father, help me never again to ignore justice and love for my neighbor and always return one-tenth of all you have given me to you, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
2. Please add your personal intentions.
